There is such a debate over the imact Photoshop has on society and it is an important thing to address. The way bodies are portrayed in the media is damaging enough, without even acknowledging how they have been virtually crafted and do not actually exist. It is no secret that the media is oversaturated with unobtainable body images and these unrealistic beauty standards pave the way to depression and eating disorders.
If you've ever Googled anything related to “modeling” and how to get started in the industry, you've likely come across my Modeling 101 – A Model’s Diary blog. It can be very difficult to gauge exactly what dress size you are, especially when you are a size 14 in Topshop but a 10 in New Look. Why do shops differ so much from each other when surely a size 14 is a particular number of inches, no matter what the shop or the particular garment is, so why does size mean different things in different shops?

How many years have people been crying out for a ‘real’ Barbie? And now we have it and it is rather anti-climactic. The new doll designed by Nickolay Lamm depicts a ‘typical’ 19 year old girl, with cellulite, acne and stretch marks. Is it really normal for a 19 year old girl to have stretch marks, especially ones which look like pregnancy stretch marks?
Is a size 16 model a plus sized model or just a model? The Oxford Dictionary definition of a model is ‘A person employed to display clothes by wearing them:’ not once is size mentioned, so why do we need a special term for those over a certain size. Many people see the term as plus size as just a label, like being brunette or being blonde but many other people have a serious issue with it. Is it really fair to call a size 14 plus size when the average size in the UK is 16, surely that would just make you normal size, right?

Changing the agenda of mainstream media is very difficult. Trying to campaign to get realistic body images into the media and change the way people treat body image is a massive task but with social media we can make this happen. Before the rise of blogs and social media the voice of the plus sized women was basically silent. We just had to accept what was put in our magazines and deal with it, yes we could write a letter to the editor to share an opinion but it was just swept under the rug.
While nail varnish is fun and exciting it can also be an absolute pain, spending an hour painting them just for them to chip 10 minutes later and then there is the what shade do I go for dilemma and as most women have hundreds of different colours it can be a very long process. But fear not, your rescuer is here with the guide to A/W nails for 2014.
Victoria’s Secret caused quite a stir last week with their advertising campaign ‘The Perfect body’ which showed a picture of their models, all with the same body type, with the words ‘A perfect body’. This is basically saying that this is the perfect body and it is something that everyone should aspire to be, but lets a face it, a size 4 is a very unrealistic image for most people and it is wrong that one body type should be classed a perfect.
When you hear the word model what do you think? A size 4 Victoria Secret model or a size 14 curvaceous woman? Don’t get me wrong these models are beautiful and fully deserve to be where they are but they simply just do not reflect society. The impact it has on young people can have detrimental effects and it plays a big part in causing eating disorders. If there were more curvy women in the media to act as role models there would be less cases of eating disorders and less bullying. Yes, some people are naturally thin with long legs and an athletic build but others have curves, life would be boring if we were all the same but why do we rarely see women with curves in the media?
